Although nowadays almost every manufacturer offers a wide variety of e-MTBs, it turned out that many of them didn’t meet my specific needs. A bike that looks promising to me and one I’d been curious about for some time was the Focus Jam² (Jam Square). Thanks to Marek from Piwnica Rowerowa bike shop and Focus bikes, I have the opportunity to test ride a bike that might eventually become a new addition to my bike garage. Why this particular model and version? What sets it apart from the millions of other e-MTBs on the market? After my initial tests, do I still think it’s a good choice? Check out the presentation and some of my thoughts.

Focus Jam² – Why this bike? – E-bike system

Earlier I had opportunity to ride various bikes and assist systems. The Bosch system perfectly suits my tastes and requirements. Specifically, my choice is the full-power CX system, preferably the latest version. It has good power, I like the characteristics of its assist modes, and it’s relatively economical with the battery when riding in Tour+ and EMTB+ modes. The new generation also means no knocking noises on descents and new updates that increase power. An absolute must for me, is the easy battery swap system. I live at Polish “flat lands”, when im going for a ride to the mountains, I want to have 2 batteries with me, to use the full potential of bike thru all day. A very nice feature in Focus is that you can fit a 600Wh and an 800Wh battery in the same compartment. If you need even more power at once, you can easily add a Range Extender with another 250Wh. I’m not a Bosch fanatic, and the company isn’t a “partner” in this test, but I’ve also had some problems with competing systems (errors and intermittent power steering, plus a main battery that fell out on a drop). The widespread availability of Bosch service centers also provides some reassurance in the context of planned trips to various parts of Europe for a ride. After the recent Avinox M2 and M2S launches, the question naturally arises: maybe go for this one instead? For now, the available version of Amflow with a permanently installed battery is out of the question for me. Models with removable batteries will be available later. I even had the opportunity for a short ride on the new Amflow, and the power is literally jaw-dropping, but that’s not my top priority. The 100 Nm of the Bosch is practically a lift anyway. Another bonus is that literally today (4th May) will be available another update for Bosch CX 5 gen, which will rise its power to 120 Nm…

Focus Jam² – Why this bike? – Geometry and suspension

Returning to purely biking-related matters, I’m looking for a versatile bike, meaning of course a full-suspension bike. Ultimately, it’s meant to be used for exploring areas beyond the reach of shuttles and lifts. I’m not aiming for a motorized downhill bike, nor do I plan on some hard racing with slashing split-seconds. My current riding style is more about having fun on the trails, sometimes flying some jumps, sometimes go on steep and technical descents. A bit of everything. 150mm rear and 160mm front travel seems like the optimal compromise for me. Although I definitely prefer having fun in technical sections over maximum stability on descents, I’m aiming for 2×29″ wheels. I’ve used mullets, but after riding my analog enduro bike and a few SL e-bikes with 2×29″ wheels, I know that with the right geometry, a 2×29″ bike rides the way I like. The Focus Jam² perfectly matched these goals. An additional incentive came from seeing what Focus rider Olly Wilkins is doing on his Focus Jam.

For me, it’s meant to be a bike for exploration and fun, and that’s exactly what the Focus Jam² seems to be. Its geometry is described as “balanced.” There’s no tendency to be long or flat. The reach in size L is 480mm, and the head angle is a rather steep 65°. The chainstays are 450mm long, which is quite impressive for an e-bike with a fairly large motor and 2×29″ wheels. There are no flip-chip regulations, which propably more than 90% of people will never use anyway. Overall, despite its considerable weight (around 25kg), the bike aims to be agile and playful. The suspension system is a classic 4-link suspension. Focus boasts that they worked hard with progression of each shock to match the overall character of the bike. So, we have here slightly increased compression. This won’t be the most ground-hugging bike or leaf-eater, but it will allow you to jump from obstacles more easily. That’s the theory.

Focus Jam² 6.8 – Why this bike? – Specs

Why the Focus Jam² in version 6.8? It’s always great to test the S-Works Levo or other top-of-the-line models equipped with the best possible components. However, we’re talking about a bike that I want to buy to complement my bike garage. So, the simple issue of budget and what the equipment offers for a given price, plays a significant role. I’m deliberately mentioning that I don’t intend to get rid of my enduro or dirt bike. This isn’t meant to replace other bikes, it will be an addition. Budget as always, is limited, so let’s get back to the components, because the specification at Jam 6.8 seems really good for the price. The aluminum frame is nicely finished, with good protection where needed. The 5th-generation Bosch CX system, the current latest, is constantly updated. The suspension is a duo from Rock Shox: Lyrik and Super Deluxe. Both in the basic: Select versions. In my opinion, they handle well different terrains and are also pretty cheap to service. Upgrading the damper to a higher-end version also won’t be a problem. The drivetrain is a Sram T-Type Eagle 70 – a cable-operated version. Servicing this won’t be cheap, but this setup should last a long time. The brakes are Sram DB8 – budget-friendly 4-piston units. I think that this is the “weakest” component in the bike, and propably will need upgrade, but nowadays good set of brakes isn’t expensive problem. The wheels are mounted on RaceFace AR-30 rims and Formula hubs, seems good and stiff. The tire selection is a very good surprise. A set of Schwalbe radial tires comes standard, in sensibly selected versions. The standard 34.9mm seatpost isn’t any top model, but it works just fine. The L size could have more travel (only 170mm). The rest are some Focus components. At the time of publishing (4th May 2026), a bike equipped this way cost around 4500 EUR at Piwnica Rowerowa with an 800Wh battery. The slightly more expensive 6.9 version was tempting, but I personally don’t get along well with the Fox suspension. The top-of-the-line 6.0 model perfectly suits my tastes, but unfortunately, it’s out of my budget… I have to save something for travels. For those looking for an even more affordable model, there’s an even cheaper version, the Jam² 6.7.

Focus Jam² 6.8 – First Thoughts

I picked up the bike from the Bicycle Cellar, fresh out of the box, assembled by crew from Piwnica Rowerowa shop, and practically ready to ride. I didn’t bother with a ride around the shop; I took it straight to the mountains and tral center. With the bike I received a box of accessories, and that’s where the first positive surprise came from. The set includes a special frame-mounted bag, a mudguard, and several pieces of protective film to put in some critical areas. While applying the wrap, I examined the finish of the frame and must admit that for a relatively budget-friendly build, it looks very good. The head tube and top tube areas feature “hidden” welds. The thick and well-designed chainstay and seatstay covers are a big plus. Focus made its own charging port on the bike. And that’s a good thing, because Bosch’s original solution is not so good. Above the lower pivot bearings, there’s an additional rubber mudguard that protects this area from mud flying off the rear wheel. Looking around the bearings, you can see additional red seals in every pivot point. This solution will significantly extend their lifespan.

A big plus is that the seatpost cable runs smoothly, allowing you to easily raise or lower it all the way to the frame. It’s not so straightforward, and on several e-bikes, I had to struggle quite a bit to remove the seatpost from the frame, even on a “premium” brand like Yeti. The downsides of Jam? The cable routing through the headset and that odd-looking stem. It seems that it is working fine but, I’m a fan of classic solutions. It’s also a shame the frame doesn’t have room on the top tube for a Bosch controller. Instead, there’s a display integrated with the shifter: the Bosch Purion 200. It is pretty big, and as a result, you have to be careful and try to avoid placing the bike upside down on the handlebars. Another detail: the battery cover mounting knob is located at the bottom, near the motor, where a lot of mud gets. The lock itself works fine, but you have to dig it out of the mud every time. However, overall, the Focus Jam² version 6.8 makes a very good impression and it is clear that it is a well-thought-out design, not a collection of random parts.

Before we get to riding, one more note about the battery. The bike is available with either a 600Wh or 800Wh battery. From the very beginning, I wanted a dual-battery set and received an 800+600 for testing. The batteries are identical in length but differ in thickness. When installing the 800Wh battery, the battery stand out slightly under the downtube. A housing with a visible bulge is designed specifically for it. The 600Wh version has a slightly smaller battery capacity but it is also 1 kg lighter. Additionally, it offers a slim housing without the “belly.” I received both housings, but I always keep the larger one on so I don’t accidentally end up with both batteries and just the smaller housing. The housings themselves are plastic, but the parts that overlap the frame are rubber-coated, so they don’t make any strange noises and fit snugly against the frame. To remove the battery itself, you need a key (two are included with the bike). The battery plugs in securely and both batteries sit firmly in the frame.

Focus Jam² 6.8 – Ride impressions

For my first test rides I went to Bielsko Biała. One of the biggest trail centers in Poland didn’t work in March, but there are a lot to choose from local and hidden trails. From the very beginning, I knew that bike won’t have easy time with me, so besides the standard suspension pressure check, I also threw in a tire insert for the rear wheel and use the sealant instead of standard tubes. The Focus doesn’t include valves in the set, but the wheels are already taped with tubeless tape, so removing the tubes isn’t a problem. Duering half of March there were exceptionally good conditions on the trails around Cyberniok mountain, and that was my first goal. On the dirt roads and uphill, Jam was comfortable. On the tarmac, you can feel a slight bouncing from the suspension, but I personally very rarely used the lockout. On steeper climbs, you have to be a bit careful about pushing the front wheel down, especially after engaging turbo mode after updating the Bosch to 100 Nm. As a touring bike and a climbing machine, the Focus Jam performed very well. Only one weak spot is the length of the dropper post. 170mm in an L frame isn’t enough for my preferences, and before any long climbs, I prefer to manually raise the seatpost. Fortunately, the cables are so well-routed that this quick adjustment isn’t a problem.

Focus Jam² 6.8 – Descents = fun

Descents are main cause why I carry those extra Nm and Wh uphill. I want to have as many cool descents as possible. My first thoughts on riding Jam on the trail is that this bike is very quiet. And we’re not talking about a warm-up ride on flow trails. First (a bit by mistake), I rode Deadwood, which is one of more difficoult and steep in the area. A few rocks, some small but fairly tight drops, and then a very steep slope with tight turns that quickly wore out the brakes. Let’s be honest, Focus Jam it’s not a full-fledged enduro, nor is it a lightweight analog bike. However, I got into it very quickly. The fairly classic geometry is very easy to use to. I quickly felt comfortable with the bike and went to check out some new trails, often riding them on sight. As mentioned earlier, this isn’t a glued-down downhill bike that will swallow anything on its way. The suspension and geometry tend to require pumping, and sometimes it’s easier to jump of the first root and fly through the next ones, than to just throw yourself into everything and hope it’ll work out. Personally, I like this “responsiveness.” Overall, after my first few rides, I’m happy with the bike because it fits my needs perfectly. The only noticeable issue is the brakes, but I could also feel there was air in the system. Fortunately, there’s Bike Builders shop in Bielsko, which closely work with Piwnica Rowerowa team. A quick service and bleeding of the rear brake improved it a bit.

The first day of enduro exploration was a great success. Then I joined some really fast guys who where, on their downhill oriented E-MTB’s. At first, I tried to keep up on the descents, but after a short fight, I returned to the fun-filled riding format. The Jam² isn’t a speed demon. During really fast rides, you can feel the basic suspension is struggling a bit, and not to mention the brakes. The most noticeable thing is the playful geometry. The steep head angle (65 degrees) is great for technical maneuvers at low speeds; at higher speeds, you have to be careful with heavy compression, as it can dive quite a bit. If you primarily want to push hard on fast downhill trails, you should simply look at the Focus Sam² model. With Sam it propably will be easier to chase those guys, but I need a more versatile bike, so I’m sticking with the choice of Jam, which can also provide a lot of performance.

Versatility is a huge priority for me personally. I don’t focus on just one type of riding. My ideal day on the bike involves, descending steep, technical trails, then have some fun on a gentle flow with big berms nad jumps, in between some DH-style riding, and for the sunset, a nice singletrack ride to enjoy the views. Ultimately, such a versatile e-bike will have to replace my analog trail bike. That’s why I had to test the Jam at local Warsaw spots. The area is totally flat, and only fun You can have there, are some jump spots. And generally speaking, e-bikes fly quite well, even on those slightly steeper lips. With the 600Wh battery, I’ve shaved 1kg off the bike and can have some fun in the air. However, there’s no point in deluding yourself into thinking it feels exactly the same as on an analog trail bike or jibber. But still You can have some fun on it also.

Focus Jam² 6.8 – Summary

So far, the Focus Jam² 6.8 fits my needs quite well as an very universal e-bike I might consider owning. Is it a perfect bike? No. However, I can already count a lot of great memories, rides, jumps, traverses on it. For a fairly budget e-MTB, I think it performs very well across a wide range of riding styles. I’ve already done a few rides, and practically everything works as it should. The bike hasn’t develop any problems, and besides bleeding the rear brake, which I mentioned earlier, all I had to do was tighten the spokes a bit on the rear wheel. The drivetrain works flawlessly, the tires grip perfectly, and the rims are dent-free. The only thing that’s definitely lacking are the brakes; I’ll try beefing them up a bit with different pads (there’s not much left of the original rear brake). Next time I head to bigger mountains, I might swap the front brake for my spare Shimano XT. The only things I’ve changed so far are adding a rear tire insert and recently I’ve changed the grips to larger-diameter, softer-compound Race Face Chester test grips. I’ll have the bike for a while, and we’ll see if I ultimately decide to buy it. But I’ll definitely share a longer test and further thoughts after more riding it.

About Focus Bikes

We love Bikes so much that we just have to build them – OUR WAY.
