{"id":2624,"date":"2016-06-16T07:57:58","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T05:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/43ride.com\/en\/?p=2624"},"modified":"2025-10-21T11:41:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T09:41:07","slug":"inaugural-les-gets-whip-off-amps-riders-for-five-days-of-gnarly-riding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/43ride.com\/en\/events\/2016\/inaugural-les-gets-whip-off-amps-riders-for-five-days-of-gnarly-riding\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural Les Gets Whip-Off amps riders for five days of gnarly riding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\">Les Gets, France, June 15, 2016\u2014The deluge making headlines across France brought new game to the European Whip-Off Championships presented by Spank in its inaugural trip to Les Gets.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Starting up a mud-slick hill and heading toward a wooden ramp and gap jump, the riders had their work cut out for them, and the winners rose to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/43ride.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/crankworx-les-gets-2016-casey-brown.jpg\" alt=\"Inaugural Les Gets Whip-Off amps riders for five days of gnarly riding\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Casey Brown<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Casey Brown:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">That was actually the hardest whip event I\u2019ve attended ever. I\u2019ve never really hit wooden jumps in my life, so it was a new thing for me. I feel it was a good learning experience. I had to really tone my whip off a bit because I couldn\u2019t really carve off the lip; I didn\u2019t feel confident in that. So it was quite different.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Brown effectively owns the women\u2019s division of the event at the moment, having taken the win in all three stops in 2015 and the first stop of the 2016 World Tour, the Official Oceania Whip-Off Championships presented by Spank in Rotorua, New Zealand. Once again, she managed to get the most air and sideways style to take home the win.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Bernardo CRUZ (BRA) joined her at the top of the podium, after churning out run after run of amplitude-popping big air. He too topped the podium in the event in France last year, and said he wasn\u2019t so sure he had it in the bag when he showed up.<\/p>\n<p>Bernardo Cruz:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">For the first time it was a bit scary.. It actually was the first time I hit a wood jump, but then it was good. When we get a dirt jump, we can lean over a bit more, especially because it was a bit wet today, so it was a bit scary to lean over. But then we make it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/43ride.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/crankworx-les-gets-2016-bernardo-cruz.jpg\" alt=\"Inaugural Les Gets Whip-Off amps riders for five days of gnarly riding\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Bernardo Cruz<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Despite the mucky conditions, nearly 80 invited competitors came out to compete for the event, which also opened the first Crankworx Les Gets festival in the sold out resort in the French Alps. The qualifying athletes were whittled to 20 finalists who staged a 20-minute jam session commentator Cam McCaul was quick to label among the gnarliest he\u2019s seen.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">When the mud finally stopped flying, even the judges couldn\u2019t seem to decide who should truly be labelled the winner. Though very different in their styles, Cruz whipping both ways and Howard claiming extreme amplitude, only one \u201csuper-clicked\u201d whip Cruz threw down finally determined first place.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Cruz topped a field with CRUZ, Ryan HOWARD(USA), Louis REBOUL(FRA), Anthony ROCCI (FRA), Sam BLENKINSOP (NZ), Carson STORCH(USA), David McMILLAN (AUS), Brook MACDONALD (NZL), Tyler McCAUL (USA) and Anton ThELANDER (SWE). Howard placed second and Reboul third.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">With several women in the women\u2019s division, it was one of the best turnouts for the new sport. In the end, Brown bested Jill KINTNER (USA) and Elizabeth REDZBETZ (ITA) for the win.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/43ride.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/crankworx-les-gets-2016-andreu-lacondeguy.jpg\" alt=\"Inaugural Les Gets Whip-Off amps riders for five days of gnarly riding\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Andreu Lacondeguy<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The finals for the Crankworx Les Gets Dual Speed &#038; Style are slated to run Thursday, June 16; however, weather conditions are expected to postpone the event to Friday, June 17.
