Fizi recently presented new models of shoes designed for riding in conditions far from dry and warm. The Ergolace GTX or typically winter Nunaq GTX models are equipped with a Gore-Tex membrane. They should allow comfortable riding even when it rains or snows and the temperatures are lower. For the quickly approaching winter season, I received both new models for test. Today I invite You for the first impressions of using the more autumn-spring, lighter Fizik Ergolace GTX model.

Fizik Ergolace GTX – Bike shoes with Gore-Tex

Fizik Ergolace GTX shoes are typical low footwear designed for biking. It is not intended for some specific cycling discipline, but will work wherever temperatures during riding drop below a dozen degrees or there is rain or mud. The main feature of this model is the use of a three-layer PRISM 3L membrane, which was created in close cooperation with the Gore-Tex brand. Acording to the manufacturer, thanks to this solution, the material is 100% waterproof from the outside. However, it still allows for ventilation and allows moist air and sweat to escape outside. The combination of these properties should provide users with a dry and comfortable foot in all riding conditions.

Fizik Ergolace GTX shoes has been designed for use in poor conditions and on difficult terrain. The upper part is reinforced with appropriate inserts that improve durability and also protect the foot. Another important element is the sole, which was created in cooperation with the respected Vibram brand. More specifically, there are two versions to choose from for SPD or platform pedals. Both options, apart from the part adapted to work directly with the pedals, also have quite aggressive tread on the sides. Thanks to this, even if you have to get off the bike to walk, the shoes will provide good grip. The design of the Ergolace GTX model is complemented by classic laces.

Fizik Ergolace GTX – my choice

For my enduro riding style, I chose the Fizik Ergolace GTX Flat model, the one design to use with platform pedals. After checking reviews of Fizik shoes online, I decided on size 43, which is slightly smaller than most other manufacturers, because normally shoes in sizes 43.5-44 usually fit me best. However, after the parcel arrived, it turned out that the mentioned size 43 was perfect for me. This model is available in two colors: grey-brown-black or white-black. Normally I would probably choose the gray version, but I was given white version.

Fizik Ergolace GTX – First impressions

Out of the box, the shoes seem very small and narrow, especially compared to some models from other brands. This is related to the philosophy of the Fizik brand, which is that a biking shoe, while maintaining stiffness and durability, should also be slim. It is designed to resemble standard sports footwear. At the same time, you can see a sole with a relatively deep tread, which has a chance of not getting clogged with mud. The new shoes seem very stiff. I”m talking about both the sole and the outer materials, which look solid and are also intended to protect our feet. However, this does not cause any problems when putting on shoes. The long tongue and classic laces give the foot wide and comfortable access to the inside of the shoe. After putting on Ergolace, the shoe seems to be narrow, but it fits my relatively narrow foot very well. As I mentioned, the entire shoe and sole are stiff. This is a characteristic that I personally value very much. The first meters you ride after putting on these shoes may be a little less comfortable. However, in my opinion, when riding in difficult terrain, a stiff shoe improves the control and feel of the bike.

Fizik Ergolace GTX – First ride

The first tests of my Fizik Ergolace GTX shoes took place in autumn. Initially, the weather was dry and quite sunny for a relatively long time. Despite this, I decided that I would check these shoes in the terrain, during a trip to local spot Jeleniowskie Ścieżki. On the first climb, I immediately felt the new shoe’s stiffness and slight discomfort. I also had similar feelings in the first few meters in my existing Specialized 2FO DH Flat shoes. However, I knew well that the foot would get used to it after a while, and later the greater stiffness would be an advantage. I wasn’t wrong. After the first descent, I quickly forgot about the unpleasant first meters.

In dry conditions, the shoe sticks very well to my platform pedals (classic HT AN01S). Driving thru bumpy rock gardens provides a lot of fun. I didn’t have any worries about my foot slipping off the pedals. The shoe may not be as “glued” as in the legendary 5.10 or my previous Specialized shoes, but it definitely allows for good control over the bike. If the foot is not positioned perfectly on the pedal, You can correct this position with small movements. For the photo session, I also had to walk up on different types of ground, and the shoe is also comfortable for short hikes. The relatively deep tread of the sole provides good grip when pushing the bike up.

Thermal comfort at temperatures of 10-12 degrees was optimal. The membrane protects our foot from the wind, but also allows it to breathe and there is no effect of excessive sweating or overheating. After an introductory enduro trip, the shoes went into my hallway as “everyday ride” shoes when I commuted to work by bike. October turned out to be a dry and quite warm month. When the temperatures started to temporarily reach 18-19 degrees and I was returning through my short forest trails, I felt that a bit more ventilation would be useful. Obviously, these are not shoes for summer, but for autumn/spring and possibly winter. When temperatures drop closer to zero, your feet will not be threatened by gusts of cold air. The Ergolace model for everyday, short rides is comfortable because the tongue opens wide, and standard laces do not cause any problems, so you do not have to struggle with the shoes every time you put them on. Compared to the previously mentioned Specialized 2FO DH Flat shoes, this is a big improvement. White may not be the best choice for shoes intended for riding in mud, wet sand, etc. The bright inserts changed their shade quite quickly. However, it is worth mentioning that the external materials are “slippery” and it is enough to wipe them with a wet sponge to return the whiteness. There is always also a gray version to choose from, which hides dirt a bit better.

While October in our country was quite warm and dry, in November the weather quickly changed to winter. Temperatures dropped to around zero and, quite unexpectedly, a layer of snow appeared. Such conditions, are ideal for testing the typically winter, new Nunaq model, which I also received for testing. However, I took the opportunity to check the Ergolace GTX model and how this special membrane is working. Of course I wasn’t disappointed. The shoes and all materials are still “fresh as new” and meet the parameters specified by the manufacturer. The only thing we need to remember is that these are low-cut footwear. Even if moisture and water do not get through the membrane even when walking in snow or splashing heavily, something can get into the shoes thru the top. In very nasty conditions, some kind of additional water protection would be useful, which would also cover the ankle. Now, after taking off the shoe after riding in such conditions, it was obvious that the foot itself was dry, but the ankle area was already wet. On the other hand if we want a more universal shoe with better ventilation, a low ankle construction as on Ergolace GTX will be a more comfortable solution. For wading through deeper snow, the Nunaq model will be useful, as it is equipped with a raised “sock”.

Fizik Ergolace GTX – summary

Fizik Ergolace GTX shoes have so far positively surprised me with their slim and stiff construction. The first field tests were very successful, and although the weather this year caused a very quick transition from summer and straight to winter. I am sure that there will be more than one test in the autumn and spring conditions for which this model was created. In the future, you can expect a long-distance test from me, to check how well the membrane and all of the materials perform. After over a month in my hands, the color has gone from white to a slightly more muddy-brown, but there are no disturbing symptoms or excessive signs of wear, so I am optimistic for the further tests.
